Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) „Materials Technology and Processes“

We are glad to offer the faculty-led Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) to our partner universities.

Topic: „Materials Technology and Processes“

The BIP includes both a physical activity and virtual periods. The physical stay is planned from 24th to 28th October 2022.

BIPs provide an opportunity to reach out to new groups of students, for example those in study fields where mobility opportunities have been limited or those who lack confidence to go abroad alone.

We don't charge any fee.

Costs

Travel costs and living expenses are covered by the participants. The sending partner universities from EU countries can use their Erasmus KA131 funds for the mobilities of their participants. Attention: We have to include blended mobilities in our IIA.

ONnline LeArning agreement

Every student has to complete an Online Learning Agreement (OLA). You can find out what data you have to enter from your coordinator at your home university.

What is the Goal

The goal of the programme is that students should become more familiar with topics related to materials technology and processes, e.g. tensile tests, hardness measurements, preparation of metallographic microsections, fatigue tests,  plastic behaviour etc., and on the other hand soft skills (e.g. time management, networking) should be acquired.

What is the Workload for the students

90 hours (70 hours blended + 20 hours physical)


physical period

20 hours

During this phase, the students follow classes related to materials technology and processes, (such as metal forming and metal additive manufacturing), where the understanding of the technologies will be deepened.

The students are additionally assigned to small international groups (consisting of approx. five students) for the work in the labs.

Students follow explanations of the lecturers in class

  • Materials Technology (90 minutes)

  • Introduction to Additive Manufacturing (90 minutes)

  • Introduction to Sheet Metal Forming (90 minutes)

  • Fatigue of Metallic Materials (90 minutes)


Lab Work

Groups of 5 students operate the machines to carry out tests and measurements

  • Tensile test(s) (30 minutes)

  • Preparation of metallographic microsections (2 hours)

  • Hardness measurements (1 hour)

  • Fatigue test (1 hour)

  • Sheet testing under multiaxial strain conditions, comparison with tensile test results (30 minutes)

  • Finite Element Analysis (FEA) (2 hours)

  • Experiments deep drawing, comparison with simulation (1 hour)

  • Laser cutting of the drawn components (1 hour)


Blended Periods

Preperation Period - Workload 40 hours

Students are provided with documents via a learning portal for independent preparation, especially for the practical activities at Esslingen University of Applied Sciences. The materials provided include documents on the topics of materials technology, additive manufacturing, sheet metal forming and fatigue of metallic materials. In addition to these documents for self-study, instruments for learning control are also included. During the preparation phase, regular video conferences are held between the students and the professors involved at Esslingen University of Applied Sciences.

Post-processing period - Workload 30 hours

Students have to prepare individual reports from the experimental results. Furthermore, the results obtained have to be presented in a final presentation (video conference).

Accommodation

We will organize and cover the costs for accommodation for your students. We have rented several apartments in Esslingen very close to the university. The apartments are very modern and comortable with fast WIFI, bathrooms, kitchen and terrace. Two or three students have to share a bedroom. Of course, students can also book a hotel on their own responsibility and at their own expense but we would be happy if they would take advantage of the offer, because that way they can get to know and network with each other.

Around mid-May we will ask about the registration of students in and in this context they will have register to a palae in the apartment. Of course, we will take gender separation into account.
