Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.)Digital Engineering
Engineer or pioneer? As a digital engineering student, you combine classical engineering with the digital technologies of the future. You learn how to use software, artificial intelligence and data-based methods to develop and optimise technical products, systems and processes. By choosing to specialise in computer science, medical engineering or robotics, you gain more in-depth knowledge in a pioneering field of technology and acquire the skills needed for a wide range of careers in industry.
You will be based on our campus in Goeppingen near Stuttgart – one of Europe’s leading centres of high-tech industry. Our flexible study models allow you to study at your own speed and to suit your own particular work-life situation.
Good reasons to study at Esslingen University of Applied Sciences
The foundation courses teach you the fundamentals of mechatronics and cover mechatronics, computer science, electrical and other fields of engineering. You learn to programme step-by-step. Preparatory courses in maths and physics help you to refresh what you have learned at school before you start to study.
This is followed by a semester of practical study when you put the theory you have learned into practice and gain valuable professional experience.
You then specialise by selecting mandatory elective modules to suit your own particular interests and thus set your own focus:
computer science
robotics
medical engineering.
You also gain additional skills such as economic thinking, project-based working, and the ability to work in a team.
As a digital engineer, you are actively involved in designing the digital future of your company. The knowledge you have gained here at Esslingen University on product development, software development, robotics, artificial intelligence and data analysis open up a wide range of career opportunities. You will apply data correctly and use it for intelligent solutions, sustainable development and smart value creation processes.
Digital engineers are in demand in many sectors of industry: from the automotive industry, mechanical and medical engineering, through to IT companies and start-ups. With a degree in digital engineering, you are ideally qualified to take the first successful step on your career ladder and have lots of different opportunities for career development.
The programme equips you with the following skills:
Product development: you learn to develop new and innovative products from the initial idea to the end product.
Practical work: you are involved in real projects and gain a lot of practical experience during a 6-month internship followed by your 6-month final thesis.
Economic thinking: you understand how technologies bring maximum benefit for companies and customers.
AI engineering: you know how artificial intelligence works and can apply this knowledge to develop digital solutions.
IoT & robotics: you train robots to complete autonomous tasks and understand how systems are interconnected.
Check the requirements Do you have a university entrance qualification (e.g. Abitur/Fachhochschulreife), a school leaving qualification from a country other than Germany, or a vocational qualification? If you do, you have already fulfilled the first requirement.
Apply to enrol When you have uploaded all your documents and certificates by the deadline specified and paid the mandatory fees and subscriptions, you must confirm your details and submit them to us. This automatically submits your enrolment application. You are then enrolled for the upcoming semester at Esslingen University of Applied Sciences. You will receive an email welcoming you to Esslingen and providing you with some initial information.
Do you want to contribute to the development of Industry 4.0 and gain a foothold in an innovative professional field? Then the Digital Engineering degree is perfect for you. You have the best prerequisites if you love technology and computers. You have previous knowledge of mathematics, physics and computer science and would like to learn programming languages. You like to solve tricky challenges, in a team or on your own.
This awaits you
The course content focuses on tasks you will face in the future to bring about the interaction of software and technology. You learn how to employ artificial intelligence and data analysis to revolutionise the processes involved in product development and manufacture. You learn to understand how different aspects are related and to develop solutions by yourself. In laboratory-based courses, tutorials and practical exercises you acquire a broad range of knowledge and learn to interrelate very different disciplines (mechatronics, computer science, electrical and other engineering fields) and to adopt a structured approach to complex tasks.
The industry is struggling with a shortage of skilled workers, especially with the mega-trend of digitalisation. A huge number of new digital solutions need to be developed. There are a lot of career changers in the development teams because you can’t study “Digital Engineering” yet. That is why I am very pleased that we are training the engineers for the digital economy of tomorrow.
