Automotive Engineering (B.Eng.)

The Faculty of Mobility and Technology offers a Bachelor degree programme in Automotive Engineering.

The programme takes seven semesters to complete and is offered every semester. Students wishing to take this programme must have pre-degree practical experience in a relevant industrial field or have gained experience of a similar nature while at school or during their vocational training. The pre-degree practical experience must be completed by the end of the 3rd semester of study at the latest (i.e. 28 February or 31 August).

 


Study Contents

The main aim of the programme is to equip students with the knowledge they need about the vehicle as a holistic system, and the teaching deals with thermodynamics, mechanics, electronics, IT and how the individual automotive components interact with each other.

The first three semesters of the Bachelor programme cover the technical fundamentals of engineering and basic aspects of automotive engineering.

In the second part of the programme, you will broaden your knowledge of the classical fields of automotive engineering such as powertrain, chassis and control systems, bodywork and service.
In the 4th and 6th semesters, you choose four compulsory elective modules from a comprehensive catalogue of modules. These modules cover not only the classical automotive engineering fields - car body development, powertrain and suspension engineering, and electrical/electronic systems - but also the design of innovative automotive concepts, diagnostic and repair techniques, and new mobility services as well.

After six months of practical experience in the 5th semester, the last part of the programme focuses on system simulation and component safety, before you complete your programme with your Bachelor project.

 


Postgraduate Studies

After gaining your Bachelor degree, you can enhance your specialist knowledge by taking the continuation Master programme in Automotive Engineering. Moreover, the Master programmes in Design and Development for Mechanical and Automotive Engineering, and Automotive Systems, at Esslingen University of Applied Sciences offer further opportunities to broaden your knowledge.

The Esslingen University added a further degree programme to its portfolio in the winter semester 2019/20 - the part-time Master degree in autonomous driving.

The faculty of Mobility and Technology works in close collaboration with the automotive industry and its suppliers to train students to become competent and team-oriented engineers who are distinguished by their technical know-how, their methodological and social skills, and their management abilities. The course content is application oriented and of practical relevance and students are taught in modern laboratories.

We continuously update the training content in collaboration with the Faculty Industrial Advisory Board, our group of service experts, and our part-time instructors from industry to ensure we offer our students a broad range of courses of topical relevance. Your Bachelor degree already qualifies you for a position in a vehicle construction or vehicle development company, or you can continue your university studies with one of our Master programmes.

Leading companies in the automotive industry such as Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Bosch and Porsche support the teaching through guest lectures, laboratory experiments and funding programmes for junior engineers.

Excellent opportunities to gain experience abroad

You can gain international experience by doing an internship abroad or by studying abroad at one of our 78 partner universities.

You can obtain a Bachelor of Engineering double degree at the Chinese-German University of Applied Sciences (CDHAW) at Tongji University in Shanghai.
