Naht Sustainable Action in Nursing Education: Curricular Integration of Planetary Health and Digital Competence
The climate crisis has long since also become a health crisis, presenting the healthcare sector with profound challenges and far-reaching change. Nursing professionals play a key role in this transformation, as they shape healthcare delivery on a daily basis. This is precisely where the project “Naht” (Sustainable Action in Nursing Education: Curricular Integration of Planetary Health and Digital Competence) comes in. Its aim is to permanently embed content related to Planetary Health and digital competence into continuing and advanced education for nursing professionals. The project is being implemented by the universities of applied sciences in Esslingen (coordinating), Bielefeld, and Hanover, and is funded with approximately €912,000 by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the European Union through the European Social Fund Plus (ESF Plus).
At the core of the project is the development and digitalisation of teaching and learning materials based on the evidence-based online resource NurSusTOOLKIT.
These materials are specifically adapted for the training of pedagogically qualified nursing professionals, known as practice educators. In cooperation with regional education providers and healthcare institutions, practice educators are supported in continuing education programmes to integrate sustainable action into their supervisory practice and to pass this knowledge on.
Project Objectives
- Qualification of practice educators: Comprehensive training programmes empower nursing practice educators to pass on sustainability-related competencies to nursing trainees.
- Curricular integration: Sustainability content is embedded into continuing education curricula to ensure that future nursing educators incorporate the concept of Planetary Health from the outset.
- Evaluation and recommendations: Experiences gathered during the project are systematically analysed and published in order to develop recommendations for future-oriented nursing education.
