How did you become aware of the courses and how did you experience these two courses at Esslingen University of Applied Sciences?

Originally, I wanted to study "normal" chemistry after school. An acquaintance and former graduate of the Master's program in Surface and Material Sciences then made me aware that there is the possibility to study some "specialized" chemistry in Esslingen. My acquaintance then showed me around the university, took me to a lecture and introduced me to a professor. The modern equipment, the small lecture groups and the closeness to the professors were some of the reasons that made me decide to study in Esslingen. I have never regretted my decision to study in Esslingen. What surprised me most in the bachelor's degree was the depth and breadth of coating chemistry, which you might not expect at first. But from semester to semester, you get to know this subject area better and better and quickly realize how versatile this branch of chemistry really is. The master's degree then gave me the opportunity to get to know other fields of surface and material science besides coatings. After that, I felt absolutely ready for the professional world in both theoretical and practical training.

Why were these two courses particularly attractive to you and has this impression held true during your studies?

The specialized training in Esslingen is almost unique in Germany. As a result, you are in great demand in industry. You learn about this already during your studies. It is not difficult to get an internship or a place for a thesis in industry - not only in Germany, but also in Switzerland and Austria. In fact, I have even experienced that you get several offers from several departments from the companies and you can then choose yourself which topic you would like to work on - so actually the world is reversed when applying. Thanks to the good theoretical training and the practical assignments during the course of study, you can get a job in industry afterwards without any problems.

You found a job as a team leader in industry directly after completing your master's degree. What are you doing now and how do you like your new job?

In my current job, I am a team leader responsible for the development of coating systems for industrial wood application at LOBA, a medium-sized chemical company in Swabia. The work is incredibly fun because you can apply what you have learned directly on a one-to-one basis. At the same time, I can pursue my passion for development to the fullest.
