Environmental Protection (M.Eng.)

General Information

General Information

This degree programme has been offered jointly by the four universities in and around Stuttgart since 1989. You study at all four collaborating universities, which means in each of the three semesters in which you focus on your specialisation, you have lectures and labs. on all four campuses. The academic modules are of practical relevance and comprise comprehensive lab. work and exercises.

The degree programme is organised and administered by Nürtingen-Geislingen University (Hochschule für Wirtschaft und Umwelt Nürtingen). Organisational aspects of the programme (application, advice, leave, etc.) are therefore dealt with by Nürtingen-Geislingen University.

Students are trained to take on roles in local authority, technical, and biological-ecological environmental protection and are awarded a Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) 120 ECTS.

Application and Admission

Application und admission

Applications for this degree programme must be submitted online via the portal of Nürtingen-Geislingen University.

The deadlines for submitting applications are

  • 15 January for the summer semester
  • 15 June for the winter semester

You can commence your studies in either the winter or the summer semester.

Only applicants who fulfil the following criteria can be admitted to the Master programme:

(1) Proof of having obtained a degree at a German university or college of cooperative education/university offering a degree apprenticeship programme or a comparable qualification at a foreign university in a Bachelor or Diplom programme in an a. engineering, b. natural sciences, or c. economics/business discipline. In cases of doubt, the Examination Board for the Environmental Protection Master programme will decide whether a degree programme can be assigned to one of the three categories.

(2) When an applicant has not yet completed their degree programme at a German university, or college of cooperative education/university offering a degree apprenticeship programme, or a comparable European university which has introduced the ECTS, at the time they submit their application, it is possible for admission to be granted subject to the proviso that proof that a suitable degree has been obtained is provided at the time of enrolment at the latest. In such cases, the following criteria must be met when the application is submitted: proof must be provided that 150 ECTS points from the study programme have been gained by an applicant on a 6-semester programme and 180 ECTS points for a 7-semester programme. If proof that a degree has been successfully obtained is not submitted by the deadline, the admission is cancelled.

Applicants with a degree from a foreign university

Esslingen University of Applied Sciences requires a university degree gained at a foreign university to be recognised by the Center for International Students at Constance University of Applied Sciences (Studienkolleg Konstanz).

The course of study is basically intended to be a full-time course of study. However, in consultation with the examination board, you can also adapt the course of study to your individual circumstances and study the Master's degree course in environmental protection part-time.

Our strengths

Multifaceted teamwork

We have joined forces to offer a programme which enables you to gain a Master of Engineering (M. Eng.) in four semesters in preparation for a career in municipal, technical or bio-ecological environmental protection. Our teaching concept is exciting and multifaceted and provides you with the specialist and methodological skills you will need.

Application oriented

Classical lectures to equip you with the knowledge you require are supplemented with integrated seminar-style exercise classes in which the theory you have learnt can be discussed and applied to actual issues. The exercises deal with practice-related example calculations or discussions and students tackle them on their own or in small groups. Practical training and practical applications in the labs here in Esslingen and in Reutlingen and also in the grounds of Nürtingen University allow you to explore aspects from the lectures in more detail and also provide you with practical experience in the natural sciences and engineering.

Project oriented

You choose your specialisations in your mandatory electives and take part in projects which explore current issues in research and practical application. You are also encouraged to suggest your own topics. The projects are completed in small groups and the members have to write a project report and give a presentation at the end. Students doing an experiment-based project can use the department’s laboratory facilities. Such projects often lead to exciting topics for final theses.

Networking

In May, you spend several days on an “extended environmental field trip” which involves making contact with potential employers, finding out about exciting environmental protection projects and acquiring valuable insights into production and management processes in industry. We also offer supplementary, subject-related field trips and excursions in our local area as part of our regular lecture schedule.

You thus benefit from the excellent network the department cultivates with companies, local authorities and associations in and around Stuttgart. You can also find a partner for a working student job or your Master’s project. Research-based final theses can also be undertaken in collaboration with partner companies or other universities at home or abroad.
