bwHPC-S5 and its predecessor bwHPC-C5 in the period 2013 - 2018 form the bridge between the users of scientific computers at universities and HAWs and the HPC systems in Baden-Württemberg. A uniform nationwide user support will be implemented through coordination across universities. With the introduction of the HPC competence centres, experts from the scientific and IT levels will form efficient teams. On the one hand, this strengthens the commitment of the scientific community to Baden-Württemberg's HPC systems and increases their visibility; on the other hand, it guarantees consistent and effective user support.
With regard to the technical implementation, the bwHPC-S5 project introduces a new level of federal service management: the services of other bw state initiatives, such as bwIDM and bwLSDF, are integrated and supplemented with new developments of administration tools and the standardization of cluster operation at the various locations.
Innovative HPC technologies are tested and evaluated in cooperation with the users according to the current state of science and the necessary steps for integration are arranged. Special attention is paid to public relations work in order to address as broad a potential user group as possible.
The aim of the project is to coordinate support for users of high-performance computers in Baden-Württemberg across universities and to implement the necessary measures. The project bwHPC-S5 is not an individual initiative, but part of the current implementation concept "bwHPC" for high-performance computing (HPC) in Baden-Württemberg.
