In addition to larger research projects, the focus is also on internal projects in order to put into pracice what has been learned in lectures. The Department of Information Technology has several different projects that run over a longer period of time. These projects are initiated either by professors or students. An excerpt of projects can be found below.
Autonomous Driving on a Scale of 1:10
An Arduino microcontroller and a Raspberry Pi evaluate data from a video camera and various sensors at intervals of a few milliseconds. Acceleration sensors provide information on driving dynamics and ultrasonic sensors detect obstacles. From this, a realistic mathematical description of the driving environment is generated. The steering angle and engine speed are controlled with the aid of the curvature of the track curve. Thus, a course on a test track with various scenarios, such as obstacles, parking manoeuvres, radar traps, zebra crossings, traffic-calmed zones, can be mastered autonomously by the model vehicle. The challenges lie in the realization of the best possible vehicle guidance in different driving scenarios. The requirements are equivalent to those of a realistic environment.
The team of the Department of Information Technology takes part in the annual university competition "Carolo Cup", which is organized by the Technical University Braunschweig. The Carolo Cup offers student teams the opportunity to face the challenges of autonomous driving. In front of a jury of experts from business and science, the teams can present their skills and compete with other university teams.
The project "Autonomous Driving" was initiated by Prof. Reiner Marchthaler. The team mainly consists of changing members of students of information technology and is supported by scientific assistants.
Big Ruggedized Autonomous Intelligent Navigation Robots
This project was initiated by students of the Esslingen University of Applied Sciences and will be managed independently. The aim is the research and development of autonomous systems on land, water and in the air, which support the rescuers in disaster areas and can take over tasks independently.
In the meantime, the project is forming as an association B.R.A.I.N. Robots e.V..
Are you interested in programming, CAD or electronics? - Then you have come to the right place! We are a mixed university group that meets regularly to design and build robotics vehicles.
While five years ago we converted and partially automated a car off-roader, in Esslingen we now concentrate on autonomous vehicles in model size. To this end, we plan from the ground up: from the definition of functions, through the creation of a rough concept, followed by a detailed CAD model, to the production of parts. The subsequent assembly involves soldering, plugging, screwing and programming the software for Arduino, Raspberry & Co to remotely control the model and transfer data. Simple driving, as with a remote-controlled vehicle, is not enough for us! Using sensors and a camera feed, our models should be able to reach their destination autonomously even without human interaction.
Virtual image of the city of Esslingen
This Esslingen 3D project aims to recreate the city of Esslingen am Neckar three-dimensionally and to generate a virtual image of the town.
The project started several years ago. In the meantime, the campus in Flandernstraße and important buildings such as the old town hall, St. Dionys Church, the city centre campus, the Dick-Areal, the Neckar Forum and the castle have been modelled. The project will be continued continuously.
Usability test of software applications
Eye-Tracking offers the possibility to capture eye movements of a person and to analyze them afterwards. This allows conclusions to be drawn as to whether the person can operate the software application intuitively.
An infrared technology integrated in the monitor recognizes the test person's eyes and records the measured data. An eye-tracking system is used to test and analyse prototypes, software and web applications with regard to usability.
Flativers is a multiplayer online game to learn the programming language C#
Flattiverse is an exciting, non-commercial, multiplayer online game designed for learning the programming language C#. Flattiverse was developed as a block course at the University of Applied Sciences Esslingen and is offered at the IT Summer School of Department of Information Technology.
Students have the possibility to learn the programming language C# playfully and with a high fun factor and to test their results together with or against each other in the universe. In the meantime Flattiverse is also open to the public.
Quadrocopter self made
Since 2007, a project of the Department of Information Technology at Esslingen University of Applied Sciences has been dealing with quadro- and octocopters, called HElikopters.
The project team has carried out a complete in-house development of a quadrocopter. The in-house development includes the construction, the periphery and an own real-time operating system.
The quadro/octocopters and helicopters are used for research purposes and for student projects in the field of control engineering and real-time operating systems. They are based on interfaculty cooperation. The teams of the Faculty of Information Technology and the Faculty of Mechatronics and Electrical Engineering have made the complex project "fly". A number of theses and dissertations also contributed to the success of the project.
