Climate change, the transition to renewable energies, and two of our most important natural resources - clean water and clean air - are the challenges facing our society now and in the future. As an engineer with a degree in Building Services, Energy and Environmental Engineering you will make a contribution to finding practical, energy-saving and environmentally friendly solutions for everyday life. After completing the joint foundation courses in engineering and the natural sciences in the first three semesters, you then select one of the three overlapping specialisations:

  • Building Services Engineering encompasses modern technical building services with heating, ventilation and air-conditioning technology, sanitary installations, the control systems and building automation for the energy-optimised operation of installations. The subjects needed by all the different trades are supplemented by courses on fire protection and sound insulation, simulation tools, facility management and building information modelling (BIM), for example.
  • The Energy Management specialisation focuses on energy use in buildings. Renewable energies, decentralised energy, energy management and the supply networks have a key role to play here.

The Environmental Engineering specialisation looks at topics which maintain the basics of our existence, such as waste management engineering, environmental process engineering, water supply and wastewater engineering as well as air pollution control.

Students on the Building Services, Energy and Environmental Engineering degree programme receive comprehensive training in the basic fundamentals: in addition to the supply of energy, the focus is on heating technology, ventilation and air-conditioning technology, building automation, sanitary installations, water supply, waste disposal and environmental engineering. It is a degree programme which places great emphasis on sustainability: the training programme for the environmental engineers of tomorrow encompasses several promising topics such as sustainable environmental engineering, sustainable air-conditioning, energy-saving technologies and renewable energies.

Apart from teaching the fundamentals, Esslingen University of Applied Sciences also places great emphasis on high levels of practical relevance. The engineers of the future (Bachelor of Engineering) enhance the knowledge they have gained in their lectures by doing their own projects in the modern laboratories in the new laboratory building, which only opened in 2017.

The intensely nurtured contacts between the university and regional industry provide students with numerous opportunities to undertake practical projects and also do their final thesis, even at undergraduate level.

Small semester intakes and everything within easy reach

In contrast to university intakes, the semester intakes at Esslingen University of Applied Sciences are manageable. Study units done in small groups and practical project work in the laboratories are the norm.

The students are in direct contact with the professors, lecturers and laboratory staff, thus ensuring they receive a good level of support. The lecture theatres and laboratories used for the Building Services, Energy and Environmental Engineering degree programme are all situated on Esslingen City Centre Campus.

The Faculty of Building Services, Energy and Environment and the service facilities at Esslingen University of Applied Sciences are very keen that their students receive good support. This starts before your degree programme has even begun: those who attend the preparatory course for mathematics or the compact physics course before starting their degree programme lay excellent foundations for their studies.
