At a glance: Core competence in mathematics, physics and engineering education Faculty of Basic Sciences

The professors in the Faculty of Basic Sciences are responsible for the foundation courses in mathematics, physics and statistics which are taught in all Bachelor degree programmes at Esslingen University of Applied Sciences that involve engineering, economics and business-related topics. They also give lecture courses on mathematical application software in a multimedia teaching laboratory, advanced lectures on the subjects which can be taken as compulsory and compulsory elective options in the Bachelor degree programmes, lectures for various Master programmes, and some special classes and events.

A state-of-the-art scanning electron microscope and several scanning probe microscopes enable a variety of investigations to be undertaken, for example in the material sciences. Contract work is also carried out in the laboratories.

The Science Education Centre and the IT Project Centre are other institutions which are supervised by the professors in the Faculty of Basic Sciences.

The faculty offers five degree programmes in Engineering Education with the specialisations electrical engineering, automotive engineering, mechanical engineering, building services engineering and computer science in cooperation with Ludwigsburg University of Education and the University of Tübingen. These innovative degree programmes not only equip students with a knowledge of engineering but also with additional training and skills in educational theory and didactics.

The cooperation on the Natural Sciences and Technology teacher training course at the University of Tübingen rounds off the faculty’s portfolio.
