The Audit

The implementation took place from 2006 to 2009. In 2009, the achievement of the measures and goals were checked which measurements and objectives have been successfully completed. New objectives have been established.

Goals of the Audit

  • To facilitate combining career/work and family life and also to improve equal opportunity. To this end, concrete and individual measures, which are tailored to the target group’s specific requirements, are introduced. They are valuable for both university staff and students at the Hochschule Esslingen
  • To make the Hochschule Esslingen a more attractive place to work, also for female students and female teaching staff
  • To create an open climate which makes it easier to overcome gender stereotyping and gender discrimination
  • To support the merger of the two universities through constructive work for the common goal of a “family-friendly university”

Measures already implemented

  • Students with family responsibilities need appropriate assistance for their study planning, e.g.:
    • If deadlines have to be respected, the illness of a child is taken into account just like the illness of a student;
    • Extension of the practical study period possible in case of family/caregiving responsibilities;
  • Day care nursery run by the Studentenwerk (preferentially) for children of students between the ages of 1 and 3 years
  • The possibility to take work at home in exceptional cases; sometimes alternating telework
  • Flexible working hours with core time and/or flexitime
  • Appointments: stages of a professional career, like work interruptions or the reduction of working time because of caregiving responsibilities, must not compromise the assessment of the qualification (decision taken by the Senate)

Future measures and the present state of the implementation

  • To introduce part-time study for students who have children or relatives in need of care is examined
  • To make professors and managers aware of work-life balance and gender issues by means of a gender training course
  • To provide workrooms for parents and children or mobile toy boxes
  • Clear designation of contact persons for work-life balance issues
  • To establish an intranet portal to make contact persons available for specific problems
  • To start off a parent project for university staff and students with children in order to offer a greater diversity of child care services
  • The creation of a child-friendly refectory (e. g. high chairs or meals for children) by the Studentenwerk has been initiated
