Chemical Engineering/Colours and Coatings
It is hardly possible to imagine a life without colours and coatings. Nearly all goods and objects in daily use have some kind of coating, whether to protect them or to enhance their appearance. A good example is the motor car. No-rust guarantees, sometimes for the lifetime of the product, would be impossible without a sophisticated system of several coatings. Similarly, around 40% of all new car sales are strongly influenced by the optical appearance of the car in the company's showroom.
All these aspects form part of the Bachelor's degree program Chemical Engineering/Colours and Coatings which, almost uniquely in the whole world, is especially concerned with the chemistry, manufacture, application and testing of colours and coatings. A special focus of the program is striving to reduce environmental pollutants in the production and application of coating materials.
Graduates of this 7-semester, multi-disciplinary degree program will have obtained a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Chemical Engineering/Colours and Coatings. They will have the right to use the job title "Coatings Engineer" in the relevant industry. This broad-based combination of chemistry, technology and design is unique and opens many interesting career opportunities to graduates.
The first part of the degree program (1st and 2nd semesters) is principally concerned with scientific basics such as chemistry, physics and mathematics. Alongside these subjects, students will also start to attend lectures on the specialist subjects of colours and vanishes, e.g. in the lectures on Theory of Form and Colour.
The main part of the degree program (3rd - 7th semesters) comprises subjects such as coatings technology, application and production technology, corrosion and building protection or materials testing, and is thus strongly oriented towards the different areas in which the future engineers will work. Naturally, aspects such as environmental protection and innovative coating systems are also included.
For all subjects, state-of-the-art, excellently equipped laboratories are available, in which students can extend their theoretical knowledge in practical exercises. Further, students gain a first impression of the basics of business management so that, as graduates, they will be equipped to recognise economic interdependencies and will master the elementary principles of company management.
The electives make it possible to specialise further, e.g. in the areas of design, protection against corrosion or the preservation of structures. CAD is also one of the specialist subjects available. The practical semester takes place in the 5th semester and the degree program is completed by the Bachelor's thesis (max. 6 months).
