Biotechnology
Biotechnology is an application-oriented, interdisciplinary science, combining biochemistry, microbiology, cell biology and production engineering. It uses the potential of microorganisms and cell cultures to improve and develop products. With the help of biotechnology, new medical diagnostic procedures and therapies become possible; people can eat more healthily; and industries are enabled to produce in an environmentally friendlier way and to save energy.
The first part of the degree program (1st and 2nd semesters) are mostly concerned with basic scientific and technical subjects such as chemistry, biology, physics, mathematics and production technology. Alongside these subjects, students also attend the specialist lectures "Introduction to Biotechnology" and "Biochemistry".
The main part of the degree program (3rd - 7th semesters) comprises a sound theoretical and practical training in the areas of biotechnology production engineering, molecular, micro and cell biology, analysis and diagnostics, as well as quality and project management. In all areas, modern and excellently equipped laboratories are available, in which students can extend their theoretical knowledge by means of practical exercises. Further, students receive their first impressions of economics and project management, so that they are able to recognise economic interdependencies and and master the elementary principles of company management. During the 5th semester, students undertake a practical semester in a company of their choice. The experience and knowledge thus acquired make it easier to enter a career. |
