Bioprocess Engineering Laboratory
Head of laboratory: Richard Biener
Assistant: Thomas Horn
Students become acquainted with all the aspects involved in the cultivation of microorganisms. This includes medium production, sterile technology and the development of pre- and main cultures. In addition, the characteristic parameters of bioreactors (such as the kLa-value, mixing time and power input) are measured.
To achieve optimal control of fed-batch bioprocesses, students design substrate feeding strategies for the organisms and test these control strategies experimentally. Several parameters involved in the analysis of cultivation processes (including substrate concentration, analysis of metabolites, cell density/optical density, osmolality, offgas analysis,...) are measured offline or online. This information is used to calculate specific growth rates as well as production and consumption rates.
Laboratory apparatus and equipment
Bioreactors of 2 l - 30 l volume, each with process automation.
Various analytical apparatus (photometer, microscope, osmometer, off-gas analyser, biosensors to measure glucose and lactates,...), safety workbench,
incubation shaker, autoclaves, centrifuges, dry and incubation cupboards, ultrasound homogenisor, high pressure homogenisor, scales, refrigerator and deep freeze, temperature control devices.
Laboratory Process Control:
With the Compact Workstation from Festo Didactic GmbH/Adiro GmbH, important control loops such as temperature, pressure, level and flow control can be experimentally investigated and students can learn how to set PID controls.
The goal of the control lab is the experimental parametrization of a level and flow controller.
