Cell Culture Technology Laboratory

Head of laboratory: Bettina Weiss
Scientific officer: Mareike Schultze

Objectives

  • Training in basic eucaryotic cell culture technology
  • characterisation of cellular markers by immunocytochemistry
  • proliferation measurement and cytotoxicity testing in microplates using chromogenic substrates
  • scale-up of adherent cells in roller bottles for production of cell mass
  • scale-up hybridoma cells in bioreactors and production of monoclonal antibodies
  • differentiation studies in transfilter systems

During a 6 week laboratory practical, students learn and practise the basic techniques of eukarotic cell culture with human and animal cell-lines.  Working independently, they plan, carry out and evaluate experiments. At the same time, they learn the principles involved in working with a QM system in the laboratory based on SOPs and lists. These basic techniques are applied in further complex experiments, e.g. in cytotoxicity testing of unknown probes, double- and triple-fluorescence staining of fixed cells and differentiation studies to form epithelial barriers.
