Course descriptions German as a foreign language
The International Office offers German courses on different levels for international exchange students and free mover students . During orientation students participate in a brief written and interview to evaluate which course fits best.
Total Target:
Consolidation of previous learning, improvement of grammatical skills, and preparation for studies in the subject courses.
Small groups allow students an active exchange of ideas with teachers and other students. Students are encouraged to present and develop their own thoughts under expert guidance. During the courses students will apply skills required for communication in the German standard language and - for advanced learners- in the scientific language.
Assessment:
Combination of regular attendace, active oral class participation, presentation, submission of coursework and end-of-year examination and/or paper.

Content - Summary:
The basic course covers a large amount of practical training of the German Standard language. Typical matters of the students in everyday situations are important. A major goal is the application of the correct use of grammar, the understanding of authentic texts (reading and listening comprehension) and the production of typical texts related to everyday life and studies. Emphasis is placed on developing and training sound communicative skills to be able to function independently in all situations inside and outside the university. A variety of basic topics and authentic situations from daily life e.g. grocery shopping, small talk, orientation in the city are used.
Practical grammar: the rules of German syntax is trained “learning by doing” with many examples.

The course incorporates a hands-on approach e.g. including students' own investigations, interviews, and field trips (i.e. theatre, places of local cultural interest, local companies).

A variety of topics and authentic texts from daily life e.g. newspapers, texts from songs, films etc. are used.

Writing: Summaries, reports, letters, essays

The course incorporates a hands-on approach e. g. including students own investigations, interviews, as well as field trips (i. e. theatre, places of local cultural interest).
Reference material:
“em Hauptkurs” or “em Brückenkurs”, Kurs- und Arbeitsbuch (Advanced learners), preparation for “ZMP (Zentrale Mittelstufenprüfung)” is possible.
